Ophthalmology Clinic - Sukhnah Camp

Al-Sukhneh Camp:

Al-Sukhneh camp was established in 1969, in the village of Al-Sukhneh, north of the Zarqa Governorate, covering an area of 68,745 Dunums. According to the 2023 UNRWA data, the camp is home to approximately 7,350 residents. The camp faces significant challenges in accessing specialized healthcare, since residents of the camp mainly rely on the UNRWA clinic, which provides services in general medicine, dentistry, and gynecology.

Through an extensive assessment conducted at Al-Sukhneh camp, it was concluded that there was an urgent gap in basic health, especially regarding eye care, which is a critical priority within the camp. Eye health is particularly vulnerable in refugee camp settings, as living conditions such as poor sanitation (which is a common problem within refugee camps) and other environmental factors significantly increase the risk of preventable eye diseases, injuries, and/or infections.

Ophthalmology Clinic – Al-Sukhneh Camp

In response to an urgent need for specialized medical care, MAP Jordan launched a dedicated Ophthalmology Clinic in 2023 at Al-Sukhneh Camp. This initiative marked a significant milestone in our efforts to improve community health and expand access to quality, specialized healthcare services for vulnerable populations.

The clinic provides comprehensive eye care services, including routine eye examinations, medications, and vision correction aids. It also addresses common eye conditions such as infections, vision-related illnesses, and injuries caused by environmental factors. When necessary, patients are referred to specialized hospitals for free surgical interventions.

From its opening through the end of 2024, the clinic has provided its services once a week and served 2,382 patients, all of whom have reported improvements. This achievement depicts both the high demand for ophthalmologic care in the camp and the effectiveness of the services provided.

Despite this progress, the community continues to face serious challenges. Overcrowding, insufficient shelter, and inadequate access to clean water and electricity have led to poor sanitation conditions. These factors significantly heighten the risk of communicable diseases, including bacterial and viral infections.
